It will involve hundreds of aprons being sent out on a journey to share the story of what we're trying to do through our project and raise funds for education, sanitation, medical camps and small business loans to help the people of Erampatti Village. The launch will be held at Bundaleer Rainforest Gardens in Brisbane on Sat 10 May 2014, and ladies in Tasmania, Brisbane and Melbourne have been busy sewing and collecting an amazing range of new and vintage aprons. We still have much to organise, but we think its going to be a fun and unique fundraiser that will join people from many places in a circle of exchange that has at its centre the goal of creating a better future for the women and children of Erampatti Village. For more details visit www.aprons4action.org.au
It coincided with my birthday so they enjoyed birthday cake, chicken biriyani for lunch and then played lots of games. Everyone had a wonderful time and they're keen to do it again. Russ foundation does fantastic work with families and children effected by HIV and are organising our first medical camp which will be held at Shalom in January. A team of doctors and medical staff from Madurai, will give free health checks and medicines to people from the village and assess everyone for a range of diseases including TB, diabetes and high blood pressure.
This is very exciting and leaves only one room unsponsored - Shekinah, one of the guestrooms. If you'd like to sponsor our last remaining room, please email hales@shalomhomeindia.org Room sponsorship costs $5,000AUD (tax deductible) and a plaque with your name will be hung outside the room. We thank all those who jumped in to sponsor the different rooms in Shammah House. What a generous and lasting legacy you are leaving for future generations.
The school sold novelty toilet paper and iceblocks, held sausage sizzles, had free dress days and collected money in a large toilet to reach this figure. Work will start early next year with the builders and village families working together to build the new toilets. We look forward to posting photo updates once the work starts. New toilets will improve hygiene at the school and help reduce absenteeism amongst teenage girls.
Sundar came to Shalom when he was 12 years old, and is the first of our boys to gain a trade qualification and get a job. Christopher and David have also completed the classroom components of their electrician's courses and are doing 3 month work placements which we hope will lead to permanent job offers. We're very proud of all three boys who worked very hard to achieve such wonderful results.
Further work has also been done on the foundations of the kitchen and dining hall. With its large windows and extensive use of rockwork, Shammah House is very different to what's normally constructed in the area, so its attracting a lot of attention with passersby and people from the village often dropping in to have a look.
The top floor area is much smaller than the ground floor, so this time the slab was completed in a couple of hours, rather than taking all day. The ground floor window and door frames were assembled onsite by a team of carpenters and installed so the renderers could start work on the interiors. Some sections have been left unrendered so decorative panels can be added at a later stage.
They set up an Indian bazaar with tables stocked with mini replicas and pictures of everything that was needed, including paddlepop stick furniture, paper doll clothes, mini mattresses and blankets and even solar panels for the roof. Everyone had a fantastic time shopping, choosing the items they wanted to help fund, they then dropped their purchases off at the Shammah House model. It was an amazing day and we were overwhelmed by the response and generosity of those who came along. With nearly $30,000 raised on the day, we'd like to pass on our thanks to the kids and leaders from KBC Kid's church, those who helped make the furniture and stock for the stores and all the wonderful shoppers who gave so generously.
Earlier in the term they had a special day where everyone recorded how many times they used the toilets at school and it added up to more than 500 visits to the toilet in one day. Then they discussed what it would be like and how it would impact their health and playground, if like Erampatti School, they had no toilets and had to use the open fields. For the next 3 weeks they are collecting loose change for new loos in a full-scale toilet money box specially modified by one of the Dads. A special Indian themed family fun night, and a uniform free day are planned for later in the term. On election day they'll be selling novelty toilet paper at the school and the giant toilet money box will also make an appearance. A big thank you to the school and Chris Bullock and her chapliancy team for all their efforts.
A big thank you to the families and businesses who've come on board to generously provide the funds we need to finish and fit-out Asher, Rohi and Nishi (our 3 sleeping rooms), Rapha, (the infirmary/counselling room) and Alizah (the playroom). With only 3 rooms left to sponsor now, Jireh (the office) and Shekinah and Eliel (our 2 guestrooms) we're getting closer to having enough funds to complete Shammah House, which is very exciting.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10905557226260471017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4647757949743541865.post-72400785856957816932013-07-18T07:15:00.000+10:002013-07-28T07:51:47.466+10:00Roof Slab Poured

Yesterday
was roof slab pouring day at Shammah House. As you can see from the
photos a lot of work has been done since my last post about the building
work. It was a busy day with more than 60 men working from 8.00 in the
morning to 5.30 in the evening. We went through hundreds of bags of
cement, truckloads of sand and gravel and lots of water. At one stage
the power went off and water had to be carted by hand from the irrigation tank.
The day went smoothly without any other dramas and just as they finished
their thanksgiving prayers at the end of the day, light rain started to
fall, perfect for damping down the slab. Exactly what they'd prayed for
at the beginning of the day. To see more Shammah House construction photos click here to go to our facebook page.
It's exciting to see the building starting to take shape, knowing that once its finished, we'll be able to take in our first girls. With 30-50 workers on-site each day (plus our 20 well diggers) the place is a hive of activity. Rocks and dirt excavated from the well have been used in the foundations saving us about $2,500AUD on fill. With the speed of construction and the falling Australian dollar, we're seeking extra donors to come on board to sponsor the completion and fitout of individual rooms so we can keep the funds flowing as needed. This week they'll pull out the last of the loosened materials, then measure the excavated depth and let us know what the final payment will be. Hopefully we'll be able to keep under our $7000AUD budget. The work took longer than expected with up to 20 men a day manually digging and lifting out the soil and rocks. The good news is that we unearthed springs at around 30ft, after only 10 feet of excavation. Each morning the pump was turned on at 3.00am to drain the well before the workers arrived and then digging and pumping continued throughout the day. By the end of May overnight inflows measured about 15ft, so daily inflows will be much higher. This amount, during the peak of summer and following on from 2 failed monsoons, is very good, and will provide plenty of water to grow crops on the rest of our land. Below are a before and after photo of the well, and a photo of the men at work.. For the next 3 years he'll be studying for his Bachelor of Science in Botany and Planation at the American College in Madurai. This is a wonderful achievement for Mani, who 5 years ago, used to spend his days playing by the village pond instead of going to school. We're very proud of Mani, he's worked very hard to achieve these results. The other fantastic news is that he's been given a scholarship, which pays for most of his university fees. Well done Mani.
First we heard that our 3 boys Pandi, Abinesh and Rasu had successfully passed every subject. Abinesh scored 399/500, a fantastic result, with 93/100 in science. He'll be eligible to go to the first level class at Alanganular High School which is for top students. Then the school rang Israel, very excited, they wanted to pass on their thanks for all our help with the tutoring programs and grade 10 classes. Every single student in the class had passed all their subjects. An amazing feat, the top scoring student got 447/500. They were so excited and are planning a special celebration in the village. What a fantastic result.
KBC families have been very supportive of the work of Shalom, with KBC Kid's Church holding annual fundraisers, and several KBC families sponsoring children. Ric and Anne enjoyed meeting the boys and staff and touring the farm and buildings. They also got to meet some families from the village whose children attend Shalom's village tutoring program which is funded by KBC families.
Unfortunately, the day after the festival was over, the grade 10's were due to sit for their main English exams, and the school was very concerned they wouldn't be able to study. So a special request was made to relocate Friday classes and exam prep classes to Shalom over the Easter weekend. A couple of the teachers even volunteered to sleep overnight and help coach the students. So over Easter, we hosted all the grade 10 boys and girls and their teachers at Shalom. They loved it so much that they decided to hold the final 2 weeks of classes at Shalom with many students sleeping overnight. It was a great time of working together with the community.
I've just spent most of the day trying to work out how to set up a few things on facebook and my head is spinning. The good news is we now have our new facebook page up and running. So if you're a facebook user, please "like" us on facebook and "share" what we're doing with your friends. The final room layout of the
new girl's buildings has been decided on. Last night, Israel had a meeting with
our sustainable design advisor to decide locations of extra windows for cross
ventilation and what size solar power system we'll need to put in. Once these
things are sorted, the designers will send me the final plans and elevations.
We've decided on the name Sharmah House which comes from the
Hebrew word Shammah which means The Lord is present, while
Sharma in the local language means, happiness, shelter, protection,
joyous comforter. The new buildings will include, sleeping rooms, office,
infrimary, playroom, study area and bathrooms around a walled garden/courtyard
plus a seperate new kitchen and open sided dining hall which will be shared with
the boys. The existing dining hall will be used to accomodate the cook and some
widows. The location of the new buildings have been marked out and excavation
of the foundations will start next month.

This can be a very
stressful time for students, because every subject must be
passed, before they can advance to grade 11 and 12 or gain entry to a certified
technical course. With rolling power cuts still in force, we decided to
set up 2 venues, where grade 10 students from our village can study over the next 4
weeks and receive help from tutors. The girls meet at the school, while the boys come to Shalom. We
weren't sure how many children would come, but so far, every student from grade 10, has turned up for each session. The teachers
also want to lend a hand and have offered to sleep over and help tutor
on the nights preceeding their particular subject exams.
